Composer and performer Patricia King Haddad’s book and a musical memoir, La Giara (The Water Jar) is based on her family’s emigration from Sicily to Philadelphia. La Giara is a story about longing for the past and the cultures from which we originate. An historical and auto-biographical work, La Giara’s music score evokes melodies of Puccini, swing of American Ragtime, lyrics of Gilbert and Sullivan, drive of Brazilian rhythms, and memorable songs of musical theatre. Comprised of dramatic and comedic compositions, La Giara expresses themes relevant to gender oppression and cultural losses that immigrant families transcended while adapting to a new world. La Giara’s powerful music intends to uplift and give meaning to the immigrant story.
